A cobalt blue shade from the basic Mr. Color line in a 10 ml bottle. A solvent-based paint intended for an airbrush.
Responsibility details are not available.
Cobalt blue was introduced at the beginning of the nineteenth century by a French chemist as an affordable substitute for ultramarine, which until then had been ground from expensive lapis lazuli. The resulting pigment is cool, clean and considerably livelier than the dark naval blues, so on a model it does not act as a shadow but as a color in its own right. It finds use on sport and training aircraft with striking finishes, on racing bodywork, on civil vehicles and on small parts where the blue is meant to shine clearly.
The carrier is an organic solvent, so in its behavior this is a lacquer. Water will not dissolve it, and thinning calls for the thinner of this particular family. The manufacturer offers water-thinnable shades under different line names, which carry the designation Aqueous or Acrysion. In return for that demand you get quick drying to a hard and smooth film that will carry further coats and a light sanding between them.
Stir the contents of the bottle properly before picking the paint up, otherwise the settled pigment will stay at the bottom and the shade will come out pale. The recommended thinning is around one part of paint to one part of thinner and is adjusted according to how thickly the paint flows from the cup. The saturated blue does cover well, but it is still worth laying it over a light base, because on dark plastic it loses its sparkle. Work at an open window and protect your airways.
