The identification yellow of the Luftwaffe, Mr. Color RLM04 yellow, is a lacquer paint in a 10 ml package for spraying with an airbrush.
Responsibility details are not available.
The RLM04 designation belongs to a pure, saturated yellow from the specification of the German Reich Air Ministry. During the Second World War it covered the areas that were meant to be recognizable from a distance: wingtips, the undersides of engine cowlings, rudders and a wide band around the rear fuselage on machines deployed in the east. It served as a recognition mark, so that friendly ground units and escorting fighters identified a machine instantly.
Yellow pigments cover badly and over dark plastic or gray filler they look muddy. So lay down a white base first and only then the yellow. You save several coats and the tone comes out bright. Areas in this color are moreover almost always masked, so let the finish cure thoroughly before you lay tape on it.
Ten milliliters of lacquer paint based on organic solvents. Fast drying and a hard film are an advantage on masked areas. It is applied with an airbrush and thinned with the products of the same brand in a ratio according to the consistency.
Besides the identification areas of aircraft, it suits German aircraft models in general, the warning elements of airfield equipment and, in a diorama, markings and lettering where a bright, unsoiled yellow is needed. Once dry, the tone can be calmed with a thin layer of a faded wash.
On these aircraft the yellow almost never appears on its own. Gray-blue and green tones of the upper surfaces, a light underside and black or white numbers complete it. It is precisely the contrast between the restrained camouflage and the bright band that makes these machines a rewarding subject.
