Prussian Blue from the Artistic Dense range is an acrylic paint in a bottle intended mainly for figures. The binder is acrylic, so the thinner is water or acrylic thinner. Watch out for confusion: the same manufacturer also carries the same shade in its oil range, and you will find similarly named products among the weathering effects as well. They are different kinds of goods — an oil is thinned with a thinner for oils and dries for days, while this acrylic dries in minutes. The shade is a deep, darkly cool blue with a hint of a green undertone.

Where the shade belongs

Prussian blue is a uniform color par excellence and at the same time one of the most useful dark tones on the palette. Besides wool cloth and cloaks it is used for breaking other colors: a drop into brown or green lowers their temperature and turns them into a credible shadow without your reaching for black. It also works as an undercoat blue beneath lighter tones and as a component in dark night scenes. On large areas it is worth watching the flatness of the result — an uneven surface is given away fastest by dark blues.

How to work with it

• Flatness: if the surface does not sit with its surroundings once dry, even the whole figure out with a final varnish, not by repainting.
• Thin it drop by drop; a dark blue thinned too far will run into the engraving and make an unwanted shadow there.
• Build highlights with a gray-blue or by adding white with a drop of ocher, as pure white cools a blue into chalkiness.
• As a shadow admixture into greens and browns it is a cleaner choice than black.
