Blackened stems left by a fire look dramatic in a scene and tell a story without a single word. A burned strip around a wreck, a scorched field boundary after a hit or dry steppe burned by the sun are among the subjects for which ordinary green vegetation is not enough. This shade is built for exactly those.
Thirty-five tufts 6 millimeters high in a dark burned coloring. The stems are not uniformly black but shot through with brown and grayish tones, which looks more convincing on a model than a single flat color.
Contrast is what works hardest. A few burned clumps set among green or dry tufts create the edge of the fire and the scene immediately gains a direction from which the blaze advanced. Around wrecks and impact points it pays to interleave them with ash or fine slag. The tufts themselves only need to be lifted off the film and pressed onto the base; on a rough surface it is safer to back them with a drop of glue.
The color can still be tuned on the model. A light pass with a dry brush loaded with gray brings out the tips of the stems, while a drop of a thin brown shade darkens the base and ties the tuft to the surrounding soil. It should not be overdone, though, because a black area with no detail takes depth away from a scene.
