XF-87 is a water-thinnable acrylic paint from Tamiya in a jar of 10 ml. The letters XF mark the flat line (X = gloss, XF = flat). It is thinned with X-20A acrylic thinner; until the paint dries it can be washed off with water.
This is the naval gray of the Imperial Japanese Navy, not an aircraft color. The Japanese naval arsenals mixed their gray to their own recipes, so the shade differed with the place where the ship was built: the gray of the Maizuru arsenal was lighter than the gray of the Kure or Sasebo arsenals. Ships built at Maizuru were painted in this shade, among them classes such as Kagero and Fubuki and the destroyer Shimakaze. If you are building a ship from another arsenal, a different gray belongs on it. Do not confuse XF-87 with XF-12 J.N. Grey, which is the color of the undersurfaces of Japanese naval aircraft and a completely different use.
Tamiya sells acrylics (the X and XF lines, thinner X-20A), enamels (thinner X-20 without the A) and lacquers of the LP line (thinner LP-10) side by side. The same IJN Gray (Maizuru Arsenal) shade also exists in the lacquer line under the designation LP-14; the paint looks the same but has a different chemistry and a different thinner. What you are buying here is the acrylic XF-87; if you need the lacquer, look for LP-14.
Keep out of the reach of children. Work in a ventilated space, especially when airbrushing.
