A rich heraldic yellow from the self-shading Vallejo acrylic range. A high proportion of binder gives it a glassy translucency and lets it flow into the engraving.

A light yet rich tone is the hardest discipline of all for a self-shading paint. The formula solves it with a high proportion of binder: the paint flows freely, stays translucent on surfaces and gathers into a darker deposit in the engraving. The result therefore looks different from a conventional opaque yellow, glassier, going toward amber in the recesses.
Banners and standards, the fields of coats of arms, yellow stripes on armor, sun and star symbols, brass fittings under a glaze and, on vehicles, warning surfaces. In all those places the fold of cloth or the edge of a plate draws itself in with no further work.
A white base coat is not a recommendation here but a condition. The darker the base, the faster the yellow drowns and all that is left is a muddy ocher surface. If you need a truly luminous shade, lay white under the paint and let it dry completely, and only then apply it.
In the retail sets of this range the yellow tends to be represented by a single tone, because it pairs badly with the others and would take up room in a set. Anyone painting heraldry or order colors therefore almost always adds it separately, even when they already have a set at home.
