A flexible sanding sponge measuring ninety by nineteen by twelve millimeters. It bends into a curve, so it follows the shape of the surface being sanded.

Sandpaper has one fundamental disadvantage. Held against a finger it follows that finger's shape only roughly, and when sanding a rounded transition such as a leading edge, an engine cowling or the wing root, a flat spot forms under the pressure of the fingers. A flexible sponge solves that problem by carrying the abrasive layer on a yielding core itself.
This piece measures ninety millimeters in its longer dimension, nineteen in width and twelve in thickness. The twelve millimeter version is stiffer than thinner variants of the same length: it bends into a sharp curve less readily, but under pressure it does not give way and holds a flat surface better. It comes into its own wherever a larger continuous area has to be sanded without waves forming in it.
It can be worked dry or under water. Sanding under running water or in a dish has two advantages: the abrasive layer does not clog and the fine dust does not stay in the air. After work the sponge is rinsed, squeezed out and left to dry freely, which makes it last considerably longer than a single use.
Besides plastic it also suits fillers, resin and cured drops of super glue. It is not recommended on photo-etched metal parts, because thin sheet is easily bent over a soft backing.
Working from coarse to fine is worth keeping to. Skipping a step only shows after spraying, when scratches appear under the varnish that were not visible before.
The package consists of the sponge alone. Fillers, thinners and other workshop chemicals are not packed with it.
