Forest Green (FS34127)

The color

Forest Green is a dark green shade listed in the American Federal Standard 595 under number 34127. The leading digit in that notation determines the degree of sheen, and a three at the beginning belongs to flat shades, which matches the finishes of military vehicles, where sheen is not wanted. The standard exists so that the same green can be repeated regardless of the maker of the paint, so using the FS number you can compare the shade with the paints of other ranges too.

Application and thinning

The paint belongs to the Orange Line range by Hataka. The thinner made for this range and the thinning ratio are given by the manufacturer on the packaging, so follow it; other thinners can curdle the paint. Stir the contents of the bottle thoroughly before use, because the pigment settles at the bottom during storage.

Painting tips

A dark green always looks darker over a small area than on a chart, so it pays to allow for the shade when choosing the base coat.

• Wash and degrease the base before spraying, as paint holds poorly on a greasy surface.
• Apply a base coat; it evens out the absorbency and settles the shade.
• Work in thin coats and let each one dry, as a heavy coat covers the engraved lines.
• Test the shade on a piece of plastic, as a green looks different over a base coat of another color.
• A flat surface picks up fingerprints easily, so hold the finished model by its edges.
