About product

IJA 1 Hairyokushoku (Grey-Green) - Air

A water-based acrylic paint from the Air Series aviation range of AK interactive. It differs from an ordinary bottled acrylic in being thinned at the factory to a consistency suitable for spraying, so it goes into the airbrush cup straight from the bottle and only exceptionally needs thinning further. It really is an acrylic, not a lacquer: it is cleaned and thinned with water or with acrylic thinner of the same brand, not with lacquer thinner. Hairyokushoku is a gray-green shade from the palette of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, that is a color for the upper surfaces of the airframe and for camouflage patches.

Layering: how many passes and why

Thinned paint has less covering strength in one pass than a thick acrylic off a brush, and with camouflage shades that is an advantage, not a fault. Build the shade up in three or four light passes at lower pressure instead of one wet one: coverage comes gradually, so at every moment you can stop before the preshading of the panel lines disappears. If you are spraying over a dark surface, count on one or two extra passes, because gray-green goes darker over a dark undercoat. Over a light surface it lightens and reads cooler, so choose the base according to the final tone you want.

Use

  • Airbrushing straight from the bottle, or with a little thinning with acrylic thinner.
  • Camouflage patches and upper surfaces of aircraft models, where a soft transition with no hard edge suits.
  • Brushing is possible, but because of the thin consistency count on more coats.
  • It dries fairly quickly, which makes laying further coats easier but calls for cleaning the nozzle as you go.

Who the paint is for

For aircraft modelers who work with an airbrush and want control over building a shade up gradually. Anyone who paints exclusively with a brush is better off reaching for a thicker acrylic.

Shake the bottle thoroughly before use. Ventilate while spraying, use respiratory protection and keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

It is a water-based acrylic. It is thinned with water or with acrylic thinner of the same brand and lacquer thinner does not belong in it. Watch out for confusion with a bottle of the same shade from the lacquer range of the same manufacturer, which is thinned exclusively with its own thinner.

In most cases no, because the Air Series range is ready for the airbrush straight from the bottle. Depending on the pressure, the nozzle diameter and the temperature in the workshop you can add a few drops of acrylic thinner, but always a little at a time.

Count on three or four light passes. Over a dark surface add one or two more, because the shade goes darker at first. A single wet coat covers faster but you lose control over the preshading.
