Italeri Round Brush No. 3 — Medium Size

A round modeling brush from Italeri in size 3. It is a tool for painting models, not a kit — the package contains only the brush, no model or paints. Size 3 is a medium size: a compromise between the precision of a detail brush and the ability to cover an area in one stroke.

Round or flat brush?

A round brush has bristles drawn to a point, so it holds a tip — even in a larger size, you can still reach into a corner or trace an edge with it. A flat brush has a straight edge, spreads paint in a wide stroke and suits flat, continuous surfaces. Size 3 is exactly the point where the two meet: it still has a tip, but it can already cover some area.

What size 3 is good for

• Smaller continuous surfaces: landing gear bays, floors, the insides of covers.
• Interior parts — bulkheads, cockpit floors, the sides of a hull.
• Figure gear and accessories: backpacks, blankets, crates, barrels.
• Filling in areas that would take needlessly long with a detail brush.

Why size 3, not 2 or 4

Compared with a 2, a 3 is noticeably faster — you cover an area in fewer strokes, which means a more even coat and fewer visible brush marks. Compared with a 4, though, it has a finer tip, so you can still work at edges and transitions with it. If you are tackling larger continuous areas or a base coat over an entire part, reach for a 4 instead.

Care of the brush

• Clean it immediately after use with the appropriate thinner (water for acrylics, synthetic thinner for enamels).
• Do not store the brush tip-down in thinner — the tip will bend and stay crooked.
• Do not press on the brush, or the bristles will splay; a larger brush does the work with the weight of the stroke alone.
• Do not let paint dry near the ferrule — on larger brushes it settles there more easily.
• After washing, smooth the tip back into a point and let it dry lying flat or tip-up.
