A flat modeling brush with synthetic hair from Italeri. Size 4 is the largest of this quartet of flat brushes (size 000, 00, 0 and 4), with a wide straight edge for covering larger areas quickly. It serves for painting, not for building the model.
A flat brush has a wide straight edge like a spatula and that is what sets it apart from a round one with a tapering point. The straight mark covers areas evenly, such as wings, sides and panels, and does not leave streaks the way a round brush does, while it also manages sharp edges and straight color transitions. With a larger size dry-brushing over extensive areas comes into its own as well: an almost dry brush is run over the side of a tank, for example, and the paint brings out the edges, rivets and wear.
With a larger brush good quality pays off twice over: a poor-quality brush sheds hairs into the paint and quickly loses its straight edge, while a good one holds its shape and lasts. After work wash the brush out immediately (acrylic with water, lacquer and enamel with the matching thinner) and never let paint dry at the ferrule, as with wide hair there is more of it and dried paint at the metal part of the handle ruins the brush. Finally shape the edge and let it dry.
