An hour of work and thirty-second flights

This small flying model from the production of a purely Czech workshop belongs to a category that several generations here know: you build it, balance it, throw it and run after it. The manufacturer recommends it to modelers from about eight years old and estimates the build at about an hour, so it can be managed in a single afternoon without a child losing interest. This kind of model has a long tradition here and is still often the very first thing a newcomer builds in a modeling club.

The parts are laser-cut and arrive in the package ready to be taken out, which on small pieces fundamentally changes the balance of effort. The builder does not lose time tracing a plan and cutting along a ruler and can concentrate on what matters, that is on accurate gluing and above all on balancing. It is precisely the center of gravity that decides whether the model glides in a long arc or sticks into the ground after the throw. The finished piece is fine-tuned with a small weight in the nose and a few test throws over a soft surface.

According to the manufacturer, flights of around thirty seconds are reached, and in really calm weather the time can approach a minute. For a model of this size that is a solid result and above all reward enough for the builder to come back for another try. Calm, windless weather in the early evening on a meadow or a playing field is ideal. It is launched with a throw slightly upward, not with full force: a sharp throw only turns the model over.

For the build you need a good glue, pins and fine sandpaper. None of that is included in the package, nor is a surface finish. The wood is usually brushed over with a thin varnish, which strengthens the surface without a substantial gain in weight.
