A flat sanding plate with a large working surface in grit 1000. It serves for leveling surfaces and gaps and for preparing the surface of a model for paint.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sanding surface is carried on a rigid flat base, and that is the whole difference from abrasive paper held between the fingers. Paper under the fingers follows the shape of a part and rounds a glued gap off, whereas a plate levels it flat. The large working surface also makes it possible to sand a whole wall of a part at once rather than in strips, so no steps or transitions are left on the surface.
Grit 1000 is among the fine steps. It is not meant for taking material off coarsely; its place is in finishing. It smooths out the marks left by coarser steps, levels filled gaps and prepares a surface for paint, so that no scratches are reflected in a smooth area. If you need to take more material off, start with a coarser step and move to this one only at the end.
Run the part smoothly over the whole surface and press only lightly and evenly. Heavy pressure will not speed the removal up; it only pushes the shape out of true and rounds the edges off. Fine steps are often sanded wet, because water carries away the dust that would otherwise clog the grain and start scoring the surface; check the manufacturer's instructions as to whether the version of the plate allows it. Keep checking the plane against the light, as it is usually too late to put things right once the paint is on. After work, clean the dust off the plate and let it dry.
A sanding plate is supplied. A model, other grits, filler and paints are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
