About product

Light Grey — an oil paint from AK interactive, 20 ml

A light gray oil from the Abteilung 502 oil range (AK interactive) in a 20 ml tube. Made from finely ground pigments, with a lower proportion of binder — it dries to a more matte, subdued look. This is a modeling paint for color refinement and weathering, not a kit.

An oil differs from an acrylic in that it dries very slowly, over a matter of days. That is its main strength: the paint can be spread for a long time, drawn out to nothing and softly blended until the transition sits right. As long as it has not dried, it can be pulled back off with thinner. It is thinned with odorless thinner or mineral spirits, not with water.

Use

  • Lightening and highlighting — a light gray pulls out edges, rivets and raised parts without looking as harsh as white.
  • Subtle shading on light-colored hardware — on gray, sand and white surfaces gray works both as a restrained tone in the shadows and as a highlight.
  • Dust and dusty surfaces — blended into horizontal surfaces and seams it imitates settled light dust.
  • Toning and shifting a shade — mixed into other oils it softens and grays down shades that are too saturated.

A light gray is the universal toner-down of the oil palette. Where pure white would look too hard, gray gives a subtler and more convincing result — which is why modelers reach for it on modern hardware and on gray camouflage.

A practical tip: an oil in a tube exudes binder, which makes greasy and glossy edges. Squeeze a drop onto card, let it draw off for a few minutes and only then pick it up with the brush.

It is applied over a fully cured painted surface — best over a gloss or satin clear coat, which stands up to thinner and allows the excess to be wiped away without risk.

Who it is for

For modelers of hardware, aircraft, ships, figures and dioramas who want to master subtle transitions of light and shadow and do not want to fight a fast-drying acrylic. Thanks to the slow drying it is welcoming to beginners too.

Safety: it contains an oil binder and it is worked with solvents (odorless thinner, mineral spirits). Ensure good ventilation, protect the skin and the eyes and keep out of the reach of children. Solvents are flammable — do not use them near an open flame.

FAQ

No. It is an oil paint for effects, shading and weathering, not an opaque coating. It is applied in thin blended layers on a finished, clear-coated model. Spray an overall gray with an acrylic, an enamel or a lacquer.

Whenever the lightening should stay restrained. Pure white tends to be too hard on a model and looks unnatural; gray gives a subtler transition and sits better on gray, sand and modern camouflage.

It dries very slowly, commonly over several days. It is thinned and blended with odorless thinner or mineral spirits, never with water. Let it cure fully before you apply another layer or a clear coat.

An oil from a tube exudes excess binder. Drawing it off briefly on card takes the greasiness out of the paint, so that it does not make glossy edges and is easier to work with.
