A construction kit from the mechanical robotic range of the Japanese company Tamiya, intended for water. The model of the swimmer is driven by a watertight underwater gearbox, and depending on the setting of the arms, the legs and the turn of the head you build it in three swimming styles: freestyle, butterfly and backstroke. The overall length is 170 mm. It is not a scale figure, but a working mechanical model on which it is visible how rotating movement is turned into a swimming stroke.
The rotation of the underwater gearbox is turned by a crank arm into an alternating movement, so the legs beat up and down. The arms turn separately, with the drive reaching them through a rubber band straight from the gearbox. Inside the body there is a polystyrene float that holds the model on the surface in the right position. The legs are made of a soft plastic 0.3 mm thick, and their flexible bending creates the force needed to move forward. Changing the position of the arms and the legs and turning the head changes the style of swimming. Power is supplied by one AAA battery, which is not included in the package. The manufacturer recommends the set from ten years.
The parts are screwed and snapped together; no soldering is needed. The most important thing is to assemble the underwater gearbox carefully according to the instructions, because the life of the motor depends on its seal. Try the model out in a bath, a larger bowl or a small pool, and use fresh water. After playing, take it out, rinse it, dry it and take the battery out, so that no damp is left inside. The rubber band driving the arms slackens over time, so count on replacing it if need be.
The set is supplied unassembled. Batteries are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
