Middle Stone - an AK interactive 3rd Generation acrylic paint

A bottled acrylic with a water-thinnable binder. The shade is a middle sandy brown tone, muted enough to work as a base camouflage color over large areas and yet warm enough to stand apart from the grays. It suits dry and desert schemes on equipment, combinations with dark green and brown, dried grass and the sandy surface of a diorama, and tarpaulins and weathered wood.

Which surfaces it belongs on and how it behaves

Middle sandy tones have the advantage of going on decently over a light base and over a middle gray one alike; do not put them over a black primer, though, where they sink into dirt. Within a camouflage scheme this shade is usually the lighter one, so lay it on first and spray the darker colors over it. For modulation, lighten it with a light brown or a sandy shade; to shade it, add a gray-brown. Do your mixing only within the acrylics of the same range.

Spraying with an airbrush

• A camouflage pattern with a soft edge calls for heavily thinned paint, low pressure and the needle close to the surface.
• The thinner the paint and the lower the pressure, the narrower and softer the line you get; thick paint at high pressure only makes broad bands and spatter.
• Before letting the paint onto the model, test the line width on a piece of paper; the setting changes with every thinning.
• Build up in thin passes so that the previous shade stays visible and the transition looks natural.
• Heavily thinned acrylic dries faster in the nozzle: blow it through during work and strip and flush the airbrush when you finish.
