Eight shades of the Red Line range for the Norm 81A/B camouflage of the kind the German F-4F Phantoms carried. Nothing but grays to the RAL scale and a black for the radome.
Responsibility details are not available.
The eight-piece lineup aims at a single subject: the camouflage regulation Norm 81A/B, which from the beginning of the eighties was carried by the F-4F Phantom II machines in Luftwaffe service. A colorful palette would be of no use here, because the whole outfit rests on grays tuned to the North German sky and to the hazy horizon over the sea.
The upper surfaces are made up by the quartet RAL 7039 Quartz Grey, RAL 7009 Green Grey, RAL 7012 Basalt Grey and RAL 7037 Dusty Grey. The underside got RAL 7035 Light Grey beside RAL 7001 Silver Grey, which after 1983 was replaced by RAL 7030 Stone Grey. Both variants of the lower surfaces are inside, so both the early and the later guise of the same aircraft can be built. The last bottle carries RAL 9005 Jet Black for the radome.
Norm 81 differs from the older green scheme in that neighboring patches have very close brightness. The difference between RAL 7012 and RAL 7037 is barely noticeable on the palette, but on a model it decides whether the camouflage comes across as convincing. Mixing it up from universal grays tends to end half a tone out, and the mistake is revealed only by the first decal applied, when repainting no longer pays.
