Black is one of the most used shades on the modeling bench, even though it is rarely applied over a large area. It serves as a dark base under metallic paints, as the filler of deep shadows and as the color of dozens of small things that are meant to recede optically: tires, instrument panels, canopy frames, the insides of wheel wells and the gaps between panels.
First smooth the surface, wash it and degrease it. On greasy plastic the paint holds badly and comes off with the masking tape when you peel it away. Mix the bottle thoroughly before use and apply the paint in several thin coats with a short pause between them. A single heavy coat floods the fine detail of the gaps and builds up ridges on the edges, which are then harder to sand off than they were to apply. Thin it with the thinner intended for this line of paints; a thinner from another line may curdle the paint into grains. The thinning ratio and the pressure in the airbrush are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
A deep black surface swallows all the highlights and the shape underneath it disappears. On large areas it is therefore better to lighten the black, or to leave it only as a base and spray a lighter shade over it so that the black stays visible in the corners and along the gaps. As a base under silver and steel paints, black pays off: metallic pigment looks richer and grains less on a smooth dark layer.
For modelers who paint with an airbrush as well as with a brush and want a black usable from the base coat all the way to the details. It is a single shade; thinner and other accessories are supplied separately, unless stated otherwise.
