Dark Yellow RAL 7028 is the base camouflage shade of German vehicles from 1943. The water-thinnable Aqua range, pre-thinned.
Responsibility details are not available.
From February 1943 German military vehicles were delivered from the factory in a uniform yellow-brown shade, over which units in the field applied green and brown patches at their own discretion. That system replaced the earlier dark gray finish and became the basis of practically all later schemes. The shade is therefore indispensable for builders of German vehicles.
The paint is water-thinnable and is supplied at a consistency for the airbrush. The dried layer stands up to masking and to the washes and oil techniques that are used on ground vehicles practically every time.
In the field the patches were also applied with a brush or a rag, so hard edges are not always a mistake. On a particular vehicle it pays to look at a period photograph, because the differences between units were large.
On vehicles from the end of the war it often happened that the crew applied the patches in the field and without templates. Irregular edges and varying density of the patches are therefore not a mistake but a documented state that gives a model character.
