Gunship Grey FS 36118, a Mr.Paint acrylic paint

This is a model paint, not a kit. The shade belongs to the acrylic Aqua line of the Slovak maker Mr.Paint, that is to the water-thinnable line and not to his traditional lacquer one. It is thinned with water or with the acrylic thinner from the same manufacturer, it sprays and brushes and it is supplied in a dropper bottle with a volume of 17 ml according to the manufacturer's data.

What the color belongs to

Gunship Grey is the dark gray of modern American combat aircraft. It appears in the dark tactical schemes of attack and strike machines and is the darkest of the group of American aviation grays that Mr.Paint makes side by side. The code FS 36118 comes from the American federal standard; its leading 3 marks the flat sample of the standard in that system. The real sheen of the dried paint is then tuned with a final flat or satin clear coat according to how worn you want the machine to look.

Use

• Airbrush: ready to spray, and with fine nozzles thin it with water or acrylic thinner.
• Brush: it serves well for touching up panels and small areas.
• A dark gray takes lightened panels splendidly, so add a little white or light gray and spray the centers of the panels.
• Light washes and dry brushing on the edges stand out over a dark base.
• A satin film the paint dries to is enough before decals; a gloss clear coat is not necessary.

Difference from the lighter grays

Mr.Paint also makes Haze Grey (FS 36270), which is markedly lighter. Both are American aviation grays and in modern schemes they often complement each other, but swapping them means either needlessly darkening or bleaching the whole model. If you are building a dark gray modern combat aircraft, reach for this paint; for the lighter low-visibility surfaces reach for Haze Grey. And Intermediate Blue, despite standing next to them in the manufacturer's range, is not a gray but a blue for Second World War aircraft.
