About product

Sea Blue ANA 623 — Mr.Paint Acrylic Modeling Paint, Aqua Line

The dark blue shade Sea Blue to the American aviation standard ANA 623. Unlike interior shades, this is an exterior camouflage paint — the color of the airframe, not the cockpit. The manufacturer Mr.Paint lists it among American Second World War aviation colors. It belongs to the water-thinnable Aqua acrylic line, and it is a modeling paint, not a kit.

Watch out for mixing up the lines. Mr.Paint is known chiefly for its lacquer (nitro) line and uses the same shade names in both lines — so you cannot tell them apart by name alone. This paint is from the acrylic Aqua line: it is thinned with water or with Aqua acrylic thinner from the same manufacturer, not with lacquer thinner. Acrylic is gentler on plastic and produces almost no smell while working.

Which scheme you are building with this paint

ANA 623 is the glossy variant of the shade Sea Blue, which the US Navy introduced for the overall blue coat of carrier aircraft in the final phase of the war; its aircraft flew in this coat afterward too. It is not the upper surface of the older tri-color scheme — that calls for the matte, non-glossy variant of Sea Blue, which is a different paint. If you are building the tri-color scheme (dark blue on top, intermediate blue on the sides, a light underside), you will need Intermediate Blue ANA 608, which the manufacturer offers in the same acrylic line. For the overall late-war blue coat, this shade alone is enough.

Use

  • The exterior coat of US Navy carrier aircraft in the overall blue scheme.
  • Sprayed with an airbrush or applied with a brush; fine-tune the consistency with water or Aqua acrylic thinner.
  • Apply in thin coats over a cured primer — large areas then stay free of blotches and streaks.
  • Coat with gloss varnish before decals, then matte and weather with a wash and pigments afterward.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of American carrier aircraft who want the correct ANA 623 shade instead of a generic dark blue, and for those who prefer water-thinnable acrylics over lacquer paints.

A modeling paint, not a kit. Water-thinnable acrylic is gentler to work with than lacquer lines, but still ventilate and do not inhale the aerosol when airbrushing. Keep out of the reach of children. Shake the paint thoroughly before use.

FAQ

Exterior. Sea Blue ANA 623 is a camouflage shade for the airframe of carrier aircraft, not a cockpit color.

ANA is the American system for designating aviation colors. The number 623 denotes the glossy variant of the shade Sea Blue, which the Navy introduced for the overall blue coat of carrier aircraft in the final phase of the Second World War.

The matte, non-glossy variant of Sea Blue was used on the upper surfaces of the tri-color scheme — that is a different paint. This shade is meant for the later overall blue coat. If you are building the tri-color scheme, you will also need Intermediate Blue ANA 608, which the manufacturer offers in the same acrylic line.

A water-thinnable acrylic from the Aqua line. Mr.Paint uses the same shade names in its lacquer (nitro) line too — this one is thinned with water or Aqua acrylic thinner, never with lacquer thinner.
