About product

A Northumbrian warrior of the 8th to 9th century - a 54 mm figure

A collector resin figure in 54 mm size from the brand Abteilung 502. The 54 mm size corresponds roughly to 1:32 scale and this is the classic format for display on its own, not an accessory to a vehicle model. The subject is a warrior from Anglo-Saxon Northumbria between the eighth and the ninth century, an early medieval theme where the color scheme rests on natural materials, metal and cloth instead of on a uniform.

The casting and its preparation

The casting comes on casting blocks and with fine parting seams left by the mold. Cut the blocks off with a saw or a knife leaving a margin and sand the remainder carefully; breaking them off does not pay with resin, because the material cracks away from the intended spot. Then wash the whole figure in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap, because the surface tends to carry remains of mold release agent, over which primer does not hold. Fit the parts dry first, fill the gaps with putty and sand them back. Use super glue for the join, as cement for plastic does not work here. Do the sanding and cutting with respiratory protection.

Painting

After a thin primer it pays with this subject to build the color scheme on the contrast of three textures: metal, leather and cloth. Metal takes a hard contrast and sharp highlights, leather on the other hand soft transitions, and cloth a matte surface with a hint of wear. The brand Abteilung 502 is known mainly for oil paints, and oil is not acrylic: it thins with mineral spirits or turpentine, not with water, and it dries in days rather than minutes. The long open time makes smooth blending of shades easier, but it calls for working in stages and letting the layers really dry through. Anyone building the color up from acrylics will reach the same result with many very thin glazes. A fine wash into the hollows and a dry brush on the edges suit the end of the work.

Who the figure is for

  • For collectors of historical figures with an interest in the early Middle Ages.
  • For modelers who want to practice painting metal, leather and cloth in a larger format.
  • For builders of vignettes, where the figure forms the whole subject of the scene.

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an unpainted resin casting that is assembled and painted.

The 54 mm size is friendlier to paint than a small scale, but preparing a resin casting calls for care when cutting the blocks off and sanding.

Acrylics and oils both work. Oils allow smooth transitions, but they dry in days and thin with mineral spirits or turpentine, not with water.

The contents of the package, including a base if there is one, are stated on the box.
