Most abrasive aids assume a flat surface. A model, though, tends to be rounded: the spine of a fuselage, a curved fender, the leading edge of a wing or the transition from a canopy into the skin. That is exactly where a rubber body of oval section comes in. Under the pressure of the fingers the rubber gives slightly and clings to the curve instead of cutting it into a flat, the way a hard block or a file does.
It is one sanding block accompanied by three self-adhesive water-resistant abrasive ovals. The ovals stick onto the body and are replaced once worn through, so the whole tool does not wear out. The water-resistant binder allows wet work, which is essential on filled seams: the slurry is washed away and the abrasive does not clog.
Improvising with a piece of abrasive paper wrapped around a finger has two weaknesses. The pressure changes with every movement, so hollows appear, and the paper breaks and crumbles at the bend. A firm rubber backing holds the same track along the whole length of the stroke and the self-adhesive face does not crease under a finger. The result is a smooth transition without waves, which only shows up once a coat of primer has been sprayed.
Replacement self-adhesive faces are made in three grits, namely 180, 240 and 400, so with one body you go the whole way from leveling filler to preparing the surface under a varnish. The tool therefore lasts far longer than the consumable on it, and one body covers several changes of face. It pays to keep all three grits to hand and only swap the faces between them, because going back a step while sanding is needed more often than one expects.
