A square gaming base 40 mm on a side from Green Stuff World. It serves as the footing for a figure on the gaming table: it carries the figure, holds it upright and above all defines the area the model occupies during a session.
Twice the side against small rank-and-file bases means four times the area, and on the table that is a big difference. A model on such a square no longer behaves as part of a line but as an element in its own right: it takes up more room in passages, squeezes between terrain less easily, and at the same time more opponents can reach it at once, because each of its edges is four centimeters long. A square footprint still allows such models to be set side by side in a continuous line, which a circle does not. The area occupied also does not change when the base is turned, so the model can face anywhere without any argument about how much room it actually takes up.
For players who are standardizing base sizes across a collection, and for owners of bulkier figures, monsters and gun crews for which a smaller format is not enough. A good choice too where there should still be room on the base for a little scenic work around the model.
