A finished diorama element that needs neither building nor planting with vegetation. The package contains a limestone rock formation of size M with growth tuned to late summer — the grass is no longer fresh and passes into the yellowed, ocher and dried tones vegetation has after weeks of heat. The element is only settled into a scene and worked into the terrain.
The parched coloring suits scenes from August and September, south-facing slopes, dry field margins, the edges of country tracks, quarries and pastures. It complements a diorama with a dusty surface and with a vehicle covered in light dust well, because its color follows on from the pigments used. The rock also works as a compositional divide that gives a scene depth and closes it off against the edge of the base.
Try the position dry and turn the formation so that the layers of limestone lie horizontally — slanted bedding reads as unnatural. Level the substrate so that the rock sits down over its whole area. Cover the transition to the scene with fine gravel, soil or dry static grass; a sharp joint is the commonest mistake that gives a diorama away. Tune the color unity with a dry brush in light ocher shades and a fine dust pigment.
