A pressure plate for working with modeling paste

A tool intended for working with pliable modeling materials, that is with putty, modeling paste or texture paste. The paste is pressed down and spread out with it over an area, or a broken surface is created by pressing and lifting, of a kind that cannot be made with a brush or a spatula alone. It is neither paint nor a ready-made effect, but a tool that lasts and is used again and again. The dimensions and the exact form are stated in the manufacturer's information.

What it is suited to

It comes into its own above all on ground and on muddied equipment, that is where paste is worked directly on the model or on the base of a diorama. It also does good service when laying in areas that are meant to stay flat: you press the paste down to the same height on them instead of spreading it out and leveling it again. It is also used to press paste into a mold or against a textured surface.

How to work with it

Apply the paste with a slight excess, so that there is something to shape. To keep the plate from sticking, wipe it with a drop of soapy water or wet it lightly; with some pastes it is enough to keep cleaning it as you go. Work in short presses rather than long smoothing strokes, otherwise the surface will stay smooth and dead. Grade the depth of the texture to the scale; in small scales it has to be finer than it seems at first sight. On running gear and fenders, let the paste run in the direction the vehicle was moving. Clean the tool straight after work, as dried paste is considerably harder to remove than fresh.
