A hollow rectangular tube with a section of 6.3 x 9.5 mm in white styrene. The heaviest of the three sizes made, open right through - it suits masts, jibs and hidden pins.
Responsibility details are not available.
A hollow tube of rectangular section combines two things that are mutually exclusive on solid bars: a large outer size and low weight. The walls are thin and the inside stays open right through, so a brass rod, a magnet or a pivot pin can be slid into it. Three sizes of the hollow rectangle are made and this is the heaviest of them; the other two measure 4.8 x 7.9 and 3.2 x 6.3 mm.
It finds typical use anywhere the real subject uses a welded closed girder. The jib of a mobile crane, the lighting mast of an industrial site, the post of a shelter, a chimney or an air duct on the roof of a building. For ship modelers it serves as the basis of a mast, and for diorama builders as the hidden backbone of a base onto which the setting is then glued. Because the section is accurate and the edges sharp, several pieces can be put together into a structure that holds a right angle by itself.
The end is best squared off with a saw guided in a miter box and fine-tuned with abrasive paper laid on glass. A round file takes the burr off the inside. To join it, a drop of thinner cement drawn along the edge is enough; the material melts and the joint outlasts the structure around it. It can be drilled with an ordinary metal drill bit at low speed.
