About product

Eduard masking set 1:32 - Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I

This is an accessory to a kit, not an airplane model. The set contains machine-cut self-adhesive masks cut exactly to the shape of the parts of a particular model in 1:32 scale. You simply lift a mask off the backing sheet, lay it on the clear part and press it down; the hand cutting of strips from masking tape, which on the glazing of a Spitfire means dozens of tiny frames, falls away. The result is straight edges with no steps and with no paint seeping under.

Watch out for the sister variant designated TFace: that one contains masks for the outer and the inner side of the glazing. This one is the basic version.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was the first production version of the British single-seat fighter with an elliptical wing and a liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine. Early machines are recognized by the simple shape of the canopy and by details of the exhausts and the propeller, which changed during production. It is precisely the large glazing that makes masking one of the most laborious parts of the build.

Usage tips

Before masking, wash the clear part in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry completely, as a mask will not hold on a greasy surface. Move the mask across with tweezers and press it down with a toothpick or a wooden stick, above all in the corners. Spray the paint in several thin coats; one heavy coat will seep under the edge. It is a good idea to spray over the edge of the mask first with the interior shade or with varnish, so that any seepage does not show on the final color. Take the mask off while the finish has only set and is not yet fully hardened, again with tweezers and with an angled pull.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Spitfire Mk.I in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who do not want to spend an evening cutting tape
  • Those bothered by uneven edges on the canopy frames
  • Competition modelers, for whom the cleanness of masking is judged

The set contains masking templates only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of masking templates for a kit in 1:32 scale that you already have. The model is not included in the package.

The TFace variant adds masks for the inner side of the glazing, so that the frames look right when seen into the cockpit as well. This set is the basic version.

Best with tweezers and an angled pull, while the finish has only set. On fully hardened paint a mask can tear off an edge.

Count on a single use. Once lifted it loses its tack and its shape, so it is better to plan each masking step in advance.
