About product

The Swiss Air Force between two traditions

A small neutral country bought its aircraft where they were available, and its machines therefore wore finishes from several traditions at once. In the 1930s the aircraft flew in silver, at the end of the decade they received a varied pattern of their own, and with deliveries of German fighters the dark European scheme arrived as well. The eight shades in this box cover all three stages.

The first includes the aluminum finish used overall on biplane fighters and light bombers until roughly 1938. The second consists of the four colors of the domestic 1938 pattern, that is brown, yellow-beige, khaki green and gray, which camouflaged reconnaissance and multirole aircraft of Swiss design. The third is the dark pair of greens complemented by a light blue for the undersides, taken over from German regulations and used until the end of the war.

Why the 1938 scheme is interesting

The four-color domestic pattern is an unusual task for a modeler. The patches are large, softly outlined, and their colors are close to one another, so the result rests on smooth transitions. The shades in this set are chosen so that they go together even after thinning, which is decisive when spraying a pattern of this kind.

The types the selection covers

Particular aircraft go with the individual colors: license-built monoplane fighters, a biplane of French origin, multirole and reconnaissance types of Swiss design, and also a German fighter from the end of the 1930s. Anyone building one of them finds the whole scheme in the box, including the undersides, and does not have to track the shades down from two different makers.

The paints thin with water and can be worked with without special ventilation. Eight bottles are enough for several models, because they repeat across the individual schemes.

Three. The all-metal silver finish up to 1938, the domestic four-color pattern introduced that same year, and the dark European scheme with a light underside.

Yes. The multirole and reconnaissance aircraft of Swiss manufacture, on which the four-color pattern was used most often, are exactly the ones these shades go with.

With water or an acrylic thinner. This is a line meant for work without aggressive solvents.

Yes. The shades repeat across the individual schemes, so a fighter and a biplane can both be finished from the same box.
