A dark gray with a green cast from the acrylic range of the Italian brand Lifecolor. The name refers to the German aviation shade RLM 74 and is completed by the number of the American FS36081 color standard.
A ship model has surprisingly many places light never reaches: the spaces under deck overhangs, the niches between superstructures, the areas under boats or the recesses around funnels. When such areas are left in the same tone as their surroundings, the model looks flat, and when they are painted over with black, a hole arises. A dark gray with a green cast is more suitable for this work: it acts as shadow but stays colored, so the eye reads it as a surface and not as emptiness. By the same logic a darker gray can underline the lower part of a hull side, so that the model gains visual mass.
