The largest of the Japanese naval arsenals gave its name to the shade Imperial Japanese Navy Kure Grey from Lifecolor, an acrylic naval gray for models of the Imperial fleet.

Kure on the shore of the Inland Sea was among the most important naval arsenals of Imperial Japan, and even the largest units of the fleet were built here. The acrylic paint Imperial Japanese Navy Kure Grey captures the naval gray associated with precisely this place and completes the group of Japanese naval shades of the Lifecolor range.
The procedure is simpler than it looks. First you find out where a ship was built and where it went through larger repairs, and only then is the shade chosen. For ships associated with Kure you reach for this gray; for the others for the tone of the arsenal concerned. When a ship went for repair elsewhere during the war, a combination may be in order as well, because the new areas got paint from the new place. It is precisely this lack of uniformity that makes Japanese ships interesting on a model: the hull tends not to be one even tone but is made up of areas with a slightly different gray.
With large ships the side surface is extensive, so it pays to proceed part by part and to build the paint up in thin coats, so that uneven streaks do not arise. The gray is worth grading by height above the water; on ships the upper parts usually look lighter, while the lower parts tend to be darker and more marked by service. On the small parts of the superstructures the basic tone without further grading is then enough.
