A photo-etched metal set from the Polish maker Aber, intended for ship models. It holds the frames of windows, doors and hatches, which appear by the dozen on superstructures and deck structures. It is not a kit of a ship but a detail accessory with which you replace coarse plastic outlines or fill in openings that a kit deals with only by an engraved line. The designation first selection means that this is the first of several sets of patterns the maker offers, not a grade of quality.
The frames of windows, doors and hatches are among the things that decide the impression of scale on a ship model. A real superstructure is literally studded with them and each one casts a sharp shadow of the kind that injected plastic will never give. The patterns are prepared in several sizes so as to cover the usual ship scales - from larger models to small waterline builds. One set therefore serves across a collection under way, not just on one hull.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard support; never break them out by twisting, because thin frames are easily distorted. Mark the positions out in advance with a soft pencil; with regular rows of windows it pays to draw a guideline, because an uneven row is immediately visible on a model. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin, not straight from the tube. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a metal primer. At the end bring the frame out with a dark wash into the gap between the frame and the wall - it is precisely that shadow that makes the whole effect.
This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.
