Four products for the winter white overspray of combat vehicles, from controlled chipping of the white coat to drifts of snow.

When German and Soviet vehicles alike sank into the snow at the turn of 1941 and 1942, crews were ordered to whiten them. Lime slurry, chalk stirred into water or hastily delivered white paint that could be washed off in spring were used. The result never looked like a factory finish: the white crumbled away at the edges, ran in streaks down from the rivets and disappeared from the running gear within a few days.
Four products cover the whole procedure, from applying the overspray to damaging it deliberately. The first is an acrylic intermediate medium sprayed over the finished base shade; once the white coat is dry, the surface only needs to be moistened and rubbed with a soft brush until the original color appears where it is worn away. The second is that very white, which opens up so readily. The third product builds drifts of snow in the fenders and on the steps, and the fourth is an enamel streaking product for dirty marks under the hatches and above the wheels.
You get the best control over the result by doing the chipping in stages and stepping back as you go: moisten, rub gently, dry, judge. Apply the enamel product only over a fully dry acrylic coat, otherwise the two solvents meet and the coat underneath starts to lift. Leave the snow texture until the very end so that pigments from the earlier steps do not get into it.
A winter finish will take fairly rough treatment, but it is exactly the degree of chipping that decides whether the machine looks freshly painted or like a vehicle after a month in the field. Decide beforehand which of the two states you want to show the viewer, and measure out how much of the white you let disappear accordingly.
