Tamiya X-19 Smoke 10 ml, a transparent smoke paint

X-19 Smoke is an acrylic paint from Tamiya in the Acrylic MINI range in a bottle of 10 ml. Note: it is not an ordinary covering paint. Smoke is a transparent (translucent) tinting shade: it does not cover the base but darkens it toward a smoky cast. The saturation is governed by the number of coats, and the more coats, the darker and smokier the effect. The X designation means a gloss finish.

What it IS and what it is NOT

• It IS: a transparent smoke paint for tinting and darkening, with the base left showing through.
• It is NOT: a covering gray or black paint. If you are looking for a full covering gray, this shade will not replace it.

Use

• Darkening and smoking clear parts: the covers of flashers and lights, instrument covers, tinted glazing and canopies.
• Smoked exhaust trails behind exhausts, on the fuselage and on the wings.
• Burn marks and scorching around gun barrels, cannon muzzles, rocket and engine nozzles.
• Patina and soiling on glazing, windows and clear parts, a subtle cast of a used machine.
• Shading and deepening the shadows in seams over an already painted surface.

Application tips

The best results come from an airbrush: thin the paint with Tamiya X-20A thinner and apply it in thin, gradual coats at low pressure. Build the effect up gradually, because smoke is easy to add and hard to take away. With a brush it suits small areas and detail rather than anything else. Stir the paint well before use.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of aircraft, military vehicles, cars and science fiction who do effects and weathering: smoking, burn marks and the tinting of clear parts. That is exactly why it is also sold in a small 10 ml bottle: effects use little paint.

The paint is intended for modeling use. Work in a well ventilated space and use protection for your airways when spraying with an airbrush. Keep out of reach of children.
