Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue, 23 ml — a matte acrylic paint

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue is a water-based acrylic paint in a jar holding 23 ml. At Tamiya the letters XF denote the matte range, while the gloss shades carry the designation X. XF-17 is a deep, dark naval blue with a calm, unshouting character which holds the shape of large areas such as wings and fuselages well.

Use

• Carrier aircraft of the US Navy from the end of the Second World War — the manufacturer lists this shade as a color for the camouflage of American naval models. In the closing stage of the war in the Pacific, carrier machines wore an overall dark blue scheme.
• Fighter and attack types of the American naval air arm — it suits models such as the Hellcat, the Corsair or the Avenger, machines which in the late scheme flew in overall dark blue.
• Naval hardware and detail — dark blue areas of ship models, accessories and equipment.
• Mixing and shifting a shade — as a dark blue base when refining tones of your own; on large areas in small scales it is customary to lighten the shade a little so that it does not look almost black.

Thinning and application

It is thinned with Tamiya X-20A thinner and it is suitable for airbrush and brush alike. On large continuous areas an airbrush is clearly the more practical choice — apply several thin, dilute coats and you will get even coverage with no brush marks. Mix the paint thoroughly before use. Because it is a dark shade, it pays to work over a lighter base and, if appropriate, to lighten the centers of the panels progressively, otherwise the detail will be lost on the model. With a brush we recommend small touch-ups rather than whole areas.

For builders of aircraft and ship models focused on the US Navy and for anyone who needs a reliable dark blue matte paint. A volume of 23 ml is comfortably enough even for spraying a larger model completely.

The paint is flammable. Work in a well-ventilated area, use respiratory protection when spraying with an airbrush and protect your eyes and skin. Keep out of the reach of children and close the jar well after use.
