About product

Tamiya XF-68 NATO Brown 23 ml — a flat acrylic brown

XF-68 NATO Brown is a modeling paint, not a kit. The pot holds 23 ml and the paint belongs to the acrylic Tamiya line — so it is thinnable with water and for the airbrush it is thinned with X-20A thinner. Do not confuse it with the enamel (solvent-based) version of the same shade, which is thinned with X-20 thinner without the letter A. The prefix XF means a flat surface — desirable on military vehicles, because it does not break the impression of scale with reflections.

What the color is for

XF-68 is the brown component of the three-color NATO camouflage — the scheme that combines green, brown and black and that became the standard for the ground vehicles of the NATO armies in central Europe from the middle of the 1980s. The paint is therefore paired with NATO green and NATO black from the same line; the typical irregular patches on vehicles are made up of these three tones. The shade is a slightly reddish leather brown, neither muddy nor rusty.

Use

  • The brown patches of NATO camouflage — tanks, IFVs, carriers, engineer and logistics vehicles.
  • Modulation of large areas (lightening panels, darkening shadows).
  • Earth shades on dioramas and running gear.
  • Leather and wooden details of figures and equipment.

How to work with it

  • Suitable for the airbrush and the brush; for the airbrush thin it with X-20A and spray thinly — the patches will then have a soft transition.
  • A flat surface silvers decals. Coat the places with decals with a gloss layer first — gloss is a good base and does not silver — and apply the matte clear coat only at the end.
  • A flat base takes washes and pigments well and suits weathering and dust effects.

Who it is for

For modelers of modern military vehicles and everyone who builds machines in NATO camouflage or needs a flat brown in a Tamiya acrylic palette.

Safety: work in a well-ventilated space and use airway protection while airbrushing. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

An acrylic. The paint is thinnable with water and for the airbrush it is thinned with X-20A acrylic thinner. The enamel version of the same shade number uses X-20 thinner without the letter A — do not confuse them.

With the NATO green and NATO black shades from the same line. The trio of green, brown and black makes up the standard three-color camouflage of NATO army vehicles, in use from the middle of the 1980s.

No. The XF designation means a flat surface. On military vehicles that is desirable — a flat finish does not break the impression of scale with reflections.

A flat surface silvers decals. Coat the area under the decal with a gloss layer, seat the decal and only then apply the matte clear coat.
