A model of a structure of the Czechoslovak heavy fortifications in 1:1000 scale from the Czech maker ROP o.s. The real subject is the artillery observation post listed as R-S 91 Vrchol, meaning summit, an isolated structure on Komari vrch in the Orlicke Mountains that belonged to the Hanicka artillery fort. The model captures the overall shape of the structure and the way it sits in the terrain on the top of the hill.
Artillery observation posts were built on prominent high points with a good view over the approaches. Their task was not to fight but to direct the fire of the fort artillery — which is why they were fitted with optics and communications equipment and rose as little as possible above the terrain. The Vrchol structure stood a few kilometers from the fort itself, to which it was linked, and was built to the third resistance class. It has survived to this day in good condition, although it lacks the armored cupolas, which were cut out after the war.
A model in such a small scale does not rest on a large number of parts but on a clean surface and a convincing setting in the terrain. Sand the surfaces lightly before painting, knock back the burrs and fill the seams. A light gray base captures a concrete surface, a dark wash over it brings out the seams and the shadows, and dry brushing then picks out the edges. Darken the openings left by the cupolas. Because the real subject is a hilltop structure, the model shows to best effect on a small mound of shaped material — low vegetation and a few individual trees are enough to show that this is a dominant point in the landscape.
The model is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, a base and terrain materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
