Decals in 1:144 for four Tornado GR1s deployed in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, with the names of the machines and their letter codes.
Responsibility details are not available.
In 1991 the Panavia Tornado GR1 flew over Iraq first on attacks against airfields from low level and only later went over to guided munitions from medium altitude. British crews drew names and characters on the noses of their machines, and these became the most striking visual mark of the whole deployment.
The set covers four such aircraft, each from a different squadron:
The variety of bases is interesting: three units operated from Tabuk and Muharraq and the fourth from Bahrain. The presence of No. 617 Squadron, that is of the famous Dambusters, also gives the set a name that means something in British aviation.
The artwork on the noses had a practical reason alongside the decorative one. Crews took turns and machines were handed over between shifts, so a striking painting was the quickest way to recognize your own aircraft on the apron. After the operation ended, most of them vanished under a new coat of paint within a few weeks.
The desert pink finish of 1991 is light and smooth, so a film settles on it easily but also gives itself away easily. Clear-coating the surface with a gloss layer, settling the decal with a damp brush and blotting the surroundings carefully are recommended. Finally even the area out with satin varnish, so that the transition to the artwork cannot be seen.
