The package holds five plastic kits of the Soviet shipboard helicopter Kamov Ka-27 in 1:200 scale. They are released by Trumpeter and supplied unassembled and unpainted. The set is conceived as an accessory to warship models in 1:200 scale, where it allows the deck and the hangar to be filled with a realistic number of aircraft. Clear parts for the cockpit glazing are included as well.
The Ka-27 is a shipboard helicopter from the Kamov design bureau with the characteristic coaxial contra-rotating rotors, thanks to which it needs no tail rotor. That layout gives the aircraft small plan dimensions, which is a decisive advantage for operating from the limited area of a ship's deck. The basic version serves to search for and destroy submarines, while further variants handle rescue and liaison tasks or guidance for anti-ship missiles. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Navy and, in revised form, remained in use with a number of other countries, where it is usually listed under the export designation Ka-28. It is still in service today and it is among the most widespread shipboard helicopters of Eastern design.
In 1:200 scale the parts are very small, so separate them with a sharp etched file or a knife rather than with nippers. Assemble the coaxial rotors so that both of them are parallel and level, otherwise the model will not look right on a deck. Lay the finish down with an airbrush in thin coats, because a heavy coat would flood the detail on parts this small. The glazing can simply be suggested with a fine brush, or you can use the clear parts and mask them with cut tape. If you place the aircraft on a model of a ship, it is worth folding the rotors on some of the helicopters and displaying a few in parking spots, which makes the diorama more convincing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
