The real subject

Pop-up headlights are among the most characteristic things the first generation of the MX-5 roadster has. By day they hide away into the front hood, and thanks to them the car looks smooth and low; once they are raised, the nose takes on a wholly different face. Their charm lies in exactly that ambiguity, and it is exactly why most of the modifications a builder of the model chooses revolve around them: up, down, or one eye raised and the other lowered.

What the set contains

Accessory parts for the pop-up headlights in 1:24 scale. They are not polystyrene, so glue them with cyanoacrylate; ordinary cement for plastic kits has no effect on them. Cut the excess material off a little way from the part with a sharp blade and sand the remainder so that the seating surface is flat. Go through the way they are applied, and any assembly of the parts, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Building and painting tips

• Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry.
• Try the fit into the body dry before the paint goes on; do any reworking of the opening on the plastic, not on the accessory.
• Decide on the position of the headlights beforehand, because it affects the shape of the cutout in the hood.
• Apply the body color before you seat the headlights permanently.
