Three masks for the national insignia of the Albatros D.III in 1:32 scale together with metal barrels. The cockpit is not masked; instead of a canopy the machine had only a low transparent screen.
Responsibility details are not available.
The designers at Albatros built the fuselage as a shell glued up from plywood strips, which was an unusual solution at a time of fabric structures. The machine gained smooth sides and a stiffness a lattice frame could not have given. The D.III version took over the narrow lower wing of French inspiration and with it the reputation of an aircraft on which a dive must not be pulled out sharply.
It is worth noticing how little transparent material this type carries at all. Above the instrument panel sits a single pane, which mechanics commonly removed, because in rain it dirtied the view more than it helped. There is nothing else here, no side window and no inset surface above the pilot's head. The modeler therefore deals with just one small part and the masking set does not allow for it; instead of cockpit masks it offers three sheets for spraying the insignia.
The vinyl is lifted off once the paint has set, while the edge is still flexible. Fit the metal tubes on the model at the very end, otherwise they will bend during handling. Anyone who wants the weapon muzzles really sharp should carefully widen their bore with a drill under one millimeter in diameter and blacken them lightly with graphite. One more small thing is worth watching: on this type during 1917 the crosses changed from an equal-armed form to a thinner one, so decide in advance which form of the machine you are building and choose accordingly how far from the wingtip you lay the mask.
