About product

Wheels for the late B-17F and B-17G in 1:32 scale (Armory)

A resin set from Armory that replaces the plastic main landing gear wheels with castings with weighted tires of type a (GY). It is issued for the late Flying Fortresses, that is the F and G versions, which made up the most numerous part of production. The manufacturer has separate sets for early and late machines, so choose according to the version you are building. The package is not a kit of the aircraft but a detail fitted to finished landing gear.

What the set offers

The wheel of the B-17 is large and carries a considerable load, which can be seen in period photographs in the flattened contact patch. The casting imitates this stance and at the same time offers the tread pattern and the division of the hub without the parting seam, which on plastic wheels runs exactly across the most visible area. Because the main landing gear retracted into the nacelles of the inner engines only partly, the wheels are visible in the flight position too; a replacement therefore makes sense even on a model with the gear retracted. The designation of the tire type is a distinguishing detail between sets in the same range, not a description of the contents of the package.

Fitting and painting tips

Before gluing, wash the parts in warm soapy water, so that the paint will hold. Cut the casting blocks off and level the surface with abrasive paper, ideally wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Check the hole for the axle dry with a drill, so that the wheel can be fitted without the pressure that would crack the casting. When painting, separate the tire from the hub with masking tape cut into a ring; a dark gray shade with a flattening agent suits the tire, while the hub tends to be in the color of the underside of the aircraft or metallic, according to the machine. Suggest dust and mud with pigment only around the contact patch, not over the whole tire.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the B-17F or B-17G in 1:32 scale
  • those who want a natural stance for a large model on its surface
  • builders bothered by the seam and the soft pattern of plastic wheels
  • more experienced modelers working with resin and cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory set, not a model of the aircraft. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check the match with the landing gear of your own model beforehand.

FAQ

The manufacturer issues it for the F and G versions. For the early Fortresses, the B-17B to E, it has a separate set, because the wheels differed over the course of production.

The name of the set does not give them, unlike the sets for the early versions. The exact contents of the package are stated on the box.

Avoid pure black. Mix a dark gray with a hint of brown, flatten it and suggest dust with pigment around the contact patch. Separate the hub with masking tape.
