About product

Soviet pilot and instructor with an ejection seat for the MiG-21 UM, 1:32 (Aerobonus)

According to the name the set holds two figures — a pilot and an instructor — and an ejection seat intended for the two-seat trainer version MiG-21 UM. The castings are of modeling resin, that is of a material that holds sharper edges and a finer surface texture than injection-molded plastic. The 1:32 scale is rewarding on figures: the face, the hands and the details of the flying suit and the helmet are large enough to really be painted, and at the same time small enough for the result to tuck into a cockpit.

The casting and seating the figure

Figures for a cockpit are cast in a seated position with bent knees and elbows, so they have to be tried dry in the particular cockpit tub before gluing. The most frequent complications are not in the casting itself but in a seated figure fouling a side panel or the frame of the canopy. The legs and the forearms are therefore often adapted by fine sanding of the contact surfaces, not by bending. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw or a cutter, not with nippers — resin breaks under side pressure.

Cleaning and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that they are rid of the remains of mold release agent; otherwise the paint beads on the surface. Then comes a thin primer, ideally sprayed, because a figure has many convex surfaces. The flying suit and the harness paint well with acrylics, whereas the face and the hands stand out with oil paints or glazes, which can be blended for a long time and shadows modeled on them. Leave the helmet and the visor until the end — a gloss surface then needs no masking. Protect your breathing while sanding resin, as the dust is fine.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who build a large aircraft in 1:32 and want a filled cockpit
  • anyone interested in figure painting, which earns its place in this scale
  • builders of dioramas and scenes on an airfield apron
  • more advanced modelers used to working with resin and super glue

The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the kit of the aircraft are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a resin figure accessory for a cockpit — a kit of the MiG-21 UM has to be obtained separately.

Super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Classic cement for polystyrene does not dissolve resin and therefore does not hold.

Yes. Remains of mold release agent from the mold stay on castings and the paint would not take on them. Lukewarm water with detergent and a soft brush are enough.

Always try the fit dry. Cockpits differ in dimensions between kits and a little fine-tuning by sanding is common with resin figures.
