Seat belts for the early Fokker DR.I in 1:32 scale

An accessory for modelers, not a kit. The sheet from Kits-World carries full-color printed three-dimensional seat belts in 1:32 scale and according to the name it is intended for the early form of the Fokker DR.I triplane. The manufacturer lists further versions for this type as well, so we recommend going by the state of the machine you are building.

The triplane and its cockpit

The Fokker DR.I was a single-seat triplane with a tube frame fuselage covered in fabric and with a very cramped, high-set cockpit. The pilot sat literally between the upper wings and the cockpit was widely exposed from above, so once the model is finished the seat stays one of the most clearly visible parts. In 1:32 scale this fact shows in full and a missing belt is visible at first glance.

Working with the sheet

• Finish the interior first, that is the tube frame, the fabric and the seat, and let them dry through.
• Cut the belt out with a sharp knife close to the edge of the print so that no white border is left.
• Follow the instructions enclosed with the sheet, which describe the way of applying it.
• Let the belt lie loose across the cushion or fall over the edge so that it looks used.
• Light fabric will take a fine wash and a hint of soiling, and the cockpit then does not look new and sterile.

For builders of the Fokker DR.I triplane in a large scale who want the exposed cockpit taken all the way, and for modelers who prefer a finished color print to folding and painting photo-etched parts.
