A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the French AMX-13 light tank. It is an aid for painting, not a kit or a part: on the wheel it marks out the rubber tire band against the rim. The set is cut for the Takom kit — more than one manufacturer makes this subject in 1:35 scale and the masks are not interchangeable between their models, so the set has to be chosen for the kit you are building.
The AMX-13 is small and light, and its running gear is in keeping. It carries five road wheels of small diameter on each side, the drive sprocket is at the front rather than the rear, and the upper run of the track travels on separate rollers. The layout with a front drive sprocket means that a toothed ring of complicated shape sits at the front, while at the rear is a smooth idler wheel — two different things at the ends of the same row. On small wheels the rubber tire band is also a fairly large proportion of the overall diameter, so the division between rubber and rim lies well away from the edge and lining it by hand shifts it easily. The finished vehicle is low and its side silhouette is made up in substantial part of the running gear itself.
The smaller the wheel, the more every tenth of a millimeter shows. A light tank is examined close up, because it is not large in itself, and a botched tire band border therefore ends up right under the viewer's nose. A sharp line, by contrast, turns five inconspicuous little wheels into an element that holds the whole lower part of the model together. On a competition table it is one of the details that tell a careful build from a quick one, without anybody saying so out loud.
