BTR-50 1:35 masking stencils (SX-Art)

A set of masking stencils for a model of the BTR-50 armored personnel carrier in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer SX-Art. It is not a kit and not decals but an accessory for painting. The stencils are laid on an already painted model and serve as a pattern for spraying a camouflage scheme or tactical markings. The paint thus becomes part of the finish and no transition arises between a decal and the surface, of the kind that often shows through on a matte area.

The real subject

The BTR-50 was a Soviet tracked armored personnel carrier from the 1950s, derived in design from the chassis of a light amphibious tank. The hull is low and tub-shaped, with an open or covered compartment for the carried crew according to the particular version. From a modeling point of view the vehicle is rewarding for the large flat areas of its sides, on which a pattern or markings show up well.

How the stencils are used

• The base paint must be fully cured, not merely dry to the touch
• Degrease the surface and rid it of dust, so that the stencil seats along its whole edge
• Press the stencil down from the middle toward the edges, and on broken areas proceed in sections
• Spray at a right angle, at a lower pressure and in several thin coats
• Take the stencil off soon after the paint has set, pulling at a sharp angle
• Unify the pattern with varnish, and only then go on with washes, dust and further effects
