The kit captures an antiaircraft vehicle built on the chassis of the German Panther medium tank and armed with an 8.8 cm Flak 36/37 gun. It is a plastic model in 1:35 scale made by Trumpeter, which joins the wider line of so-called Flakpanthers. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of color schemes offered are given in the instructions inside the box.
The designation Flakpanther is used for a group of late designs for a heavy antiaircraft vehicle that was to be created by converting the Panther chassis. The guiding idea was to give a large-caliber artillery system tracked mobility and to protect the crew with an armored superstructure with folding sides, so that the weapon could work through its full traverse. The 8.8 cm gun was in its day one of the standard antiaircraft weapons of larger caliber, and mounting it on a tracked chassis was technically demanding above all because of its weight and dimensions. Most of these designs stayed at the level of project documentation and never reached series production, so the model is to a large extent a reconstruction of a design intention.
Work from the chassis up: complete the running gear, the road wheels and the tracks before you start on the superstructure. Glue the parts with thin cement for polystyrene, which wicks into the joint and leaves the edges clean. Apply a primer before painting, so that the paint holds even on sanded areas. Try the folding sides and the gun mounting dry beforehand and decide whether you want to build them folded down or raised — that determines how much of the interior will be visible and what is worth painting in detail. Spray the base shade with an airbrush in several light layers, then put a dark wash into the recesses and the rivets, and finally dry pigments for dust and mud on the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
