Self-adhesive stencils for spraying a multicolor camouflage finish onto a model of the M4A2 Sherman medium tank. The stencils define the shape of the color areas on the hull and the turret, so a modeler does not have to spray the pattern freehand or cover it with masking putty. They are laid onto a dry base coat.
The Sherman has the surface of a cast part on the turret and on part of the hull, which kit manufacturers imitate with a grainy texture. It is precisely this texture that is the riskiest place for spray stencils. The edge of the stencil will not seat perfectly on it and the paint gets under it by capillary action, so the edge comes out frayed. Before spraying, therefore, press the edge of the mask down along its whole length with a blunt tool and expect the result on grainy areas to be somewhat softer than on smooth armor.
A proven trick: once the stencil is applied, spray the edge itself with a very thin coat of the same shade the base is sprayed in. The paint runs into all the microscopic gaps and seals them once it dries. Only then spray the new shade, which can no longer get under the edge. Repair any slight seepage with a fine brush while the model is still without a clear coat. Lift the stencils off at the time when the paint is dry to the touch but not yet fully cured.
The stencils are a modeling accessory. The kit, the paints and the clear coat are not included in the package.
