The photo-etched set is intended for a model of the Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf. D in 1:35 scale. Its designation as the basic set and its place as the first part suggest that it is the starting set of the range, with others following on from it. Photo-etched metal suits the sheet-metal parts this carrier has all over the hull: fenders, brackets, loops, meshes and clamps, which cannot be made thin in injected plastic.
The Sd.Kfz. 251 is a German half-track armored personnel carrier of the Second World War. The 251/1 version is the basic form for carrying infantry, the hull is open at the top and the armor plates are sloped. The Ausf. D form is the late production batch with a simplified rear and with side bins built into the hull walls, which sped up production.
Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp blade, make the bends along the grooves and better still try dry how they sit on the plastic underneath. Glue the metal with cyanoacrylate glue onto a degreased surface. Before painting, go over the whole thing with a coat of primer so that the shade holds on the smooth metal; only then come the base color of the vehicle, dark accenting of the seams and a suggestion of mud and dust on the running gear.
