This set from the Chinese manufacturer Voyager Model brings brass photo-etched parts for the side skirts of the running gear of the Israeli Merkava Mk.IV main battle tank. It is not a kit of the tank but an aftermarket accessory fitted to the Academy 13213 plastic model.
The Merkava Mk.IV is an Israeli main battle tank taken into service in the mid-2000s. The characteristic feature of the whole Merkava family is the layout with the engine at the front, which frees the rear for the crew compartment and an access door. The vehicle carries a 120 mm smoothbore gun and modular armor whose sections can be exchanged. The side skirts protect the running gear and on the real vehicle they are fairly thin panels with pronounced gaps between the segments.
Injection-molded plastic has minimum thicknesses dictated by the technology, so the skirts on a production kit tend to be several times thicker, converted to real size, than they should be. Brass photo-etched parts are an order thinner and, once painted, come across convincingly above all when seen from the side and from below, which is exactly where everyone looks at a model. Before gluing, degrease the parts with alcohol or acetone and cover them with a good primer for metal, otherwise the paint will hold poorly on smooth brass. Glue with thin cyanoacrylate applied with a pin in a minimal amount, or with a slow-setting two-part epoxy, which will let you align a part for a while longer.
This is an add-on set for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
